Physiotherapy & hydrotherapy

for your canine companion

About

Bouncing Back Veterinary Physiotherapy is run by Rebecca (Becky) Gibson BSc(Hons) AdvCertVPhys L3CertSAHydro MIRVAP(VP)(ICH); a level 7 qualified veterinary physiotherapist and level 3 qualified hydrotherapist, member of the Institute of Registered Veterinary and Animal Physiotherapists (IRVAP).

Knowing that she wanted to work with animals in some capacity, Becky applied to study for a degree in Applied Animal Studies at the University of Northampton, graduating in 2014. But, it was her own dog, Benji, and her growing involvement in dog agility, which inspired Becky to persue her long-running interest in anatomy and rehabilitation and study for an Advanced Certificate in Veterinary Physiotherapy with Canine and Equine Physiotherapy Training. Becky gained her level 7 qualification in veterinary physiotherapy in 2017 and set up Bouncing Back soon after.

In her free time, Becky's two working cocker spaniels, Reuben & Archer, keep her very busy as they love to take part in dog agility, mantrailing and hoopers!

What to expect at your physiotherapy appointment

Your first appointment combines a thorough assessment of your dog's condition and their first treatment, lasting for approximately 90 minutes. An initial appointment will involve a combination of the following, where appropriate:

  •     Taking a full subjective paitent history.
  •     Assessing your dog's gait, which can involve observing your dog moving at a variety of paces, both on and off lead.
  •     Observing how your dog performs certain activities, such as sit to stand, getting up/down from a lying position, getting in/out of the car etc.
  •     Assessing joint range of motion to establish the amount of movement your dog currently has and whether this is limited, normal or excessive.
  •     A hands on palpation to assess aspects such as muscle tone and symmetry, as well as to identify areas of muscle spasm and discomfort.

From this initiial assessment, a personalised treatment program will be created for your dog which will include a range of manual techniques, electrotherapies and exercise prescription as appropriate. The first treatment is included with the initial assessment.

In most cases, a home exercise plan will be created for you to follow between treatment sessions to aid in the rehabilitation process and may include advice on how to best manage your dog's condition through subtle alterations to daily routine and/or home environment.

If further treatments are required then these will involve a short reassessment, including gait analysis and palpation to check for changes in your dog's condition, followed by suitable treatment techniques and will last for approximately 45 - 60 minutes.
